Hal Mooty of Huntsville confirmed to federal bench for Northern District of Alabama

(U.S. Senate)

On Tuesday, the U.S. Senate confirmed Huntsville attorney Harold D. “Hal” Mooty III to serve as a U.S. District Judge for the Northern District of Alabama.

In September, President Donald Trump formally nominated Mooty and the Senate Judiciary Committee held a hearing. Today, in an 66-32 bipartisan vote, the Senate made it official.

Now officially on the bench, Mooty is a former partner at Bradley Arant Boult Cummings LLP in Huntsville, where his practice focused on commercial litigation.

A graduate of The University of Alabama School of Law, Mooty served on the National Trial Advocacy and Moot Court teams and was inducted into the Order of Barristers. He earned his B.S. from the University of Alabama (2005), where he was Student Government Association president.

“I was deeply proud to vote to confirm Montgomery, Alabama, native Hal Mooty for a federal judgeship. His outstanding record at one of Alabama’s preeminent law firms and throughout his career speaks for itself,” U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) said after his confirmation.

“Having known Hal for 24 years, I have seen firsthand his relentless pursuit of excellence, commitment to the rule of law, and dedication to our great state. I am additionally thankful to President Trump for his exceptional leadership in nominating Hal to serve in the judiciary and to Senator Tuberville for his partnership in recommending Hal to serve in the federal judiciary.”

“I have every confidence Hal will apply our laws fairly, uphold the Constitution, and serve with distinction as a federal district court judge,” Britt added.

“Congratulations to Hal Mooty on his confirmation as District Judge for North Alabama,” U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) wrote.

Mooty joined Bradley in 2012. He has served on the Supreme Court of Alabama’s Commission on Access to Justice and volunteers with the Madison County Volunteer Lawyers Program. He is also a past president of Crisis Services of North Alabama.

He occupies the seat previously held by Judge Abdul K. Kallon, who resigned in 2022.

Fellow Alabamians, State Supreme Court Justice Bill Lewis and Edmund G. LaCour, nominated the same day as Mooty, remain on the Senate calendar awaiting final confirmation votes.
