Mayor Phil Segraves has announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for Alabama House District 17, which includes Marion and Lamar counties and the city of Haleyville in Winston County.
“I’m excited to continue my work to grow the economy of northwest Alabama,” Segraves said. “I’ve built my career around bringing investment to our communities, and I’ll keep fighting to bring good-paying jobs and economic development to Marion and Lamar Counties, and the city of Haleyville, in Winston County.”
Segraves, who has served five terms as mayor of Guin, began his political career on the Guin City Council. He has also been involved in several local and regional boards, including the Guin Park and Recreation Board, the Northwest Alabama Council of Local Governments (NACOLG), and the Northwest Alabama Gas Board. In addition, he is a past president of the Alabama League of Municipalities.
“As a member of the Alabama Legislature, I’ll continue to focus on rural economic development, but I’ll also make sure our schools, K-12, 2-year, and technical schools, are well funded,” Segraves said. “I promise voters that I will always stand up for conservative principles, and I’ll be a leader at the statehouse on keeping taxes low.”
During his time as mayor, Segraves led efforts to extend Guin’s city limits to Interstate 22. Through public and private partnerships, he helped secure funding for water, sewer, natural gas, electricity, and broadband along the corridor. That work attracted a 101-room Holiday Inn hotel at exit 26, which created 54 new jobs. He also worked with regional officials to establish the first electric vehicle supercharging station on I-22, located on the hotel property.
“Now thousands of people stop in Guin, Alabama to eat a meal, stay in our award-winning hotel, and charge their electric vehicle as they travel across our nation,” Segraves said. “I’m very proud of the collaboration between governments, developers, and our utility partners.”
The Republican primary election will take place on May 19, 2026.
