During a recent campaign stop, Parker Griffith, the Democratic nominee for Alabama governor, was asked what led him to decide to run for the state’s highest office.

His response was, well, frankly just about what we’ve come to expect from the cursing party-switcher who recently compared Alabama politics to warring Islamic sects.

“How did I get here?” He asked rhetorically. “How am I the guy they shoved out on the end of the diving board, stuck him in the butt with a knife?”

Griffith proceeded to tell the assembled audience that other well known Democrats of generations past decided not to run, essentially making him the beleaguered party’s last option.

“Jim Folsom backed out. Sue Bell Cobb, no más, too hard,” he said. “Billy Beasley decided 24 hours before February the seventh, no más.”

Outside of his frequent gaffes on the campaign trail, Griffith’s entire campaign thus far has focused on his call for a lottery and for the state to expand Medicaid under ObamaCare, two issues that Democrats have been pushing in Alabama for years to no avail.

But hey, at least he’s around to inject a little bit of fun into an otherwise boring General Election season in The Yellowhammer State.
