Alabama Supreme Court Associate Justice Greg Shaw on Friday released a statement saying that he will file to run for reelection on Tuesday, which is the first day of the Alabama Republican Party’s qualifying period for the March 3 primary.
Shaw was first elected to the Supreme Court in 2008. Immediately prior to that, he had been serving on the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals since January of 2001. He has previously been chief judge of the Alabama Court of the Judiciary and served as senior staff attorney for Justice James Gorman Houston, Jr. for 15 years.
Shaw was reelected to a second term on the state’s highest court without opposition in 2014.
“Serving the people of Alabama on the Supreme Court has been a tremendous honor that comes with even greater responsibility,” Shaw said in a statement.
“I will once again ask the voters to place their trust in me to serve with integrity, impartiality and always place the law over politics,” he concluded.
Born in 1957 and raised in Birmingham, Shaw graduated respectively from Banks High School, Auburn University and Samford University’s Cumberland School of Law. He is married to S. Samantha “Sam” Shaw.
Sam, also a Republican, was elected Alabama’s state auditor in 2006 and reelected in 2010.
ALGOP qualifying for the 2020 cycle will run from October 8 — November 8, 2019.
As of Monday, Shaw is expected to face a primary challenge from State Sen. Cam Ward (R-Alabaster).
