Perry Hooper, a Republican activist and former Montgomery area lawmaker, has been indicted for sexual abuse, according to court documents reviewed by WSFA 12 News.
Hooper, 68, was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Task Force shortly after an incident allegedly took place Aug. 16 at the 100 block of Commerce Street in downtown Montgomery.
Court filings state that the former lawmaker “grabbed the victim’s breasts and waist while shoving his pelvis against the victim’s backside.” The affidavit further states, “He then began kissing her neck before she was able to break free.”
Hooper was held at the Montgomery County Detention Facility and released on $15,000 bail. His next court date is scheduled for Dec. 21, according to Alabama Daily News.
If convicted of the charge, Hooper will face a maximum 10 years in prison and a $15,000 fine.
Upon serving in the Legislature for nearly two decades, Hooper maintained his presence in Alabama’s political arena. He has served as an active member of the Alabama Republican Party state executive committee.
Hooper partially led former President Donald Trump’s campaign effort in Alabama during the 2016 GOP presidential primary election cycle. The former lawmaker was also an at-large Trump delegate to the Republican National Convention in 2016.
Yellowhammer News’ request for comment placed with Hooper’s legal representation was not immediately met with a response.
