Governor Kay Ivey issued a memo directing flags to be flown at half-staff on Thursday in honor of Selma police officer Marquis Moorer, who was tragically slain while on duty.

Officer Moorer was fulfilling his oath to protect and serve on Tuesday, July 27, when he was shot and killed in an ambush at Selma Square Apartments, where he lived. Moorer’s significant other was wounded in the incident.

During his arraignment hearing in Dallas County last week, Javonte Stubbs, age 18, was officially charged with the murder of Moorer and the attempted murder of Moorer’s significant other. The alleged killer was also charged with shooting into an occupied building.

Attorney General Steve Marshall offered his condolences to Moorer’s loved ones.

“Every day, officers routinely risk their lives simply by putting on their uniforms and performing their duties to protect their fellow citizens,” said Marshall. “We must honor them and never take for granted the sacrifices they make on our behalf. I ask you to join me in prayerful gratitude for Officer Moorer as we hold his loved ones in our hearts.”

Governor Ivey stated that today’s order is a mark of respect for the fallen officer.

The Selma Police Department held a procession Thursday morning. A graveside service shortly followed where Moorer was laid to rest.
