Gov. Kay Ivey by proclamation officially recognized January 23-29 as “Alabama School Choice Week” to highlight the benefits of K-12 educational choice across the state.

The governor’s proclamation coincides with the commencement of the 12th annual National School Choice Week, a yearly occasion that promotes the awareness of options in K-12 education.

Ivey joins governors, city and county elected leaders around the nation who have issued similar proclamations to celebrate the week. The state has recognized “Alabama School Choice Week” by proclamation 10 out of the last 11 years.

Parents, schools and other organizations across Alabama have planned 416 events and activities to promote school choice, according to a release. The celebrations include pep rallies, open houses and virtual contests which aim to inform parents about existing public, private, virtual, and home educational options.

National School Choice Week president Andrew Campanella praised Ivey’s proclamation as a show of support for school choice awareness.

“The parents in Alabama and across the country who are searching for the best learning fit for their children are the inspiration for School Choice Week,” said Campanella. “We are grateful for Gov. Ivey’s proclamation and wish Alabamians the best as they celebrate their education choices.”

National School Choice Week, a not-for-profit and apolitical effort, places an equal amount of emphasis on promoting traditional public, charter, magnet, online, private and home education options. Annual events are centered around providing informational resources to families regarding various types of learning environments.
