As Ukrainians take up arms alongside military forces to defend their nation’s sovereignty against Russian invasion, Gov. Kay Ivey has proclaimed Wednesday as a day of prayer for the beleaguered Eastern European nation.

In a statement announcing her proclamation, Ivey noted Alabama’s dense religious population and urged the citizenry to pray for Ukrainians as they fight to protect their homeland.

“Alabama stands in solidarity with the people of Ukraine as they fight to protect their country and democracy,” stated Ivey. “Alabamians are deeply rooted in their faith, and as many Christians observe Ash Wednesday, I urge our citizens to pray for peace in Ukraine.”
