A young businessman and native of North Alabama is clearing the field early after announcing his candidacy for the District 2 seat in the State Senate.

John Roberts reported that in the first 21 days of his campaign, 89 individual donors cumulatively contributed $101,675.

Roberts is seeking the seat currently held by State Sen. Tom Butler (R-Madison), who announced his retirement from the state legislature in July.

“I am honored that our campaign has generated this kind of excitement about the future of Senate District 2 and Alabama,” said Roberts. “We have received contributions from citizens and businesses, which shows our vision and message resonates with voters in every demographic.”

In addition to a successful initial period of fundraising, the Business Council of Alabama and the Huntsville Madison County Builders Association have endorsed Roberts.

“These organizations understand what it takes to build a strong economy—smart policies, skilled workers, and support for job creators,” said Roberts. “I’m honored to have them endorse our campaign for State Senate. I look forward to partnering with our business community to advance the policies Alabama needs to compete and win.”

“In 21 days, we have built a coalition of working Alabamians, conservative leaders, and business leaders looking to build a better Alabama, and we are just getting started.”

At age 30 in 2022, Roberts also ran for the U.S. 5th Congressional District, after former U.S. Rep. Mo Brooks’ retirement from politics.

The Alabama Republican Party primary will be held on May 19, 2026.
