Golden Rule BBQ celebrates 134 years with world record attempt and statewide recognition

August 9 will be a milestone day for Irondale and the State of Alabama, as one of the state’s longest-operating restaurants aims to break a Guinness World Record. City and state officials, including Governor Kay Ivey and Irondale Mayor James D. Stewart, Jr., are commemorating the occasion with proclamations officially declaring August 9 as Golden Rule BBQ & Grill Day.

Founded in 1891, Golden Rule BBQ & Grill has been serving Irondale and the surrounding community for 134 years. Recognized as one of Alabama’s oldest continuously operating restaurants, it has built a reputation for its barbecue and long-standing service to generations of families.

To celebrate the milestone, the restaurant is planning to sell 5,000 BBQ pork sandwiches in just 8 hours as part of a Guinness World Record attempt. Sandwiches will be available all day for 95¢ each, with a limit of 10 per customer.

The restaurant extended an open invitation to the public through its Facebook page.

The celebration will include:

– 95¢ BBQ pork sandwiches
– Live music and a DJ
– A bouncy house and family-friendly activities
– Cold drinks, sweet tea, and traditional barbecue fare
– Photo opportunities, giveaways, and additional surprises

Organizers say the day is not just about food—it’s a way for the community to take part in a historic moment for the restaurant and the city.

The celebration is a chance for locals and visitors alike to support a beloved local business—and be part of a potential world record, one sandwich at a time.
