Giddyup! Stallions out to defend USFL title

The defending USFL champion Birmingham Stallions are set to defend their title after becoming the first team in the league to clinch a playoff spot.

The Stallions (8-2), the South Division’s No.1 seed and the league’s top-scoring team, will host the New Orleans Breakers (7-3), the division’s No. 2 seed, Saturday. Kickoff is 7 p.m. in Protective Stadium in a rematch of last season’s South Division championship game.

Stallions’ Head Coach Skip Holtz said his team is ready to defend the title.

“I think being the champion, our team is excited,” said Holtz. “I keep hearing from them, ‘Hey coach, I’ve got to come back and defend.’ I think they are excited to have the opportunity to try and do this again.”

The winner of Saturday’s game will advance to the championship game against the winner of the Pittsburgh Maulers/Michigan Panthers game.

The USFL Championship Game is July 1 in Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio. Last year, the Stallions defeated Philadelphia 33-30.
