Entrepreneur, community organizer and former Mobile City Councilmember Jermaine A. Burrell has announced his intent to run for mayor of Mobile in the August election.

“Mobile has invested a great deal in me, instilling the values and lessons in me that have allowed me to travel the world and grow my leadership and management skills in corporate America,” said Burrell, who has 25 years of corporate leadership experience. “I was thrilled to put my experience to use for district 3 and our city during my tenure on the city council and I was crushed when the city’s lack of job opportunities forced me to move away to continue growing in my industry.

“I returned home because I love Mobile but no one should have to leave our city or go without because they can’t grow their careers, like I did, or because they can’t afford to live, or because their business won’t flourish, or because they don’t feel safe in their homes.”

Burrell said he plans to speak with Mobilians in the coming weeks to learn more about their top issues.

Burrell has 25 years of senior leadership experience in business and IT management and a long track record of boosting productivity, reducing operational costs, managing global cross-functional teams and directing multi-million-dollar budgets for several Fortune 500 companies.

During his time on the city council, Burrell led successful efforts to revamp the Taylor Park municipal pool in Oakdale, renovate the old South Brookley School into the updated Dauphin Island Parkway Senior Activities for Independent Living Center and restore Duval Park.
