Flags ordered to half-staff in Alabama to honor law enforcement, including slain Capitol officer

Governor Kay E. Ivey, following a proclamation by President Donald J. Trump, has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff until sunset on Wednesday.

A memo to all state agencies by Ivey outlined that the directive honors U.S. Capitol Police Officers Brian Sicknick and Howard Liebengood. Sicknick last week died from injuries sustained during violence at the Capitol. It was reported that Liebengood died by suicide over the weekend after having been on duty at the Capitol rioting.

“The state of Alabama joins our fellow Americans in mourning the loss of these officers’ lives and pray for their families to be comforted during their time of grieving as well as for peace and reconciliation to be restored in our great nation,” wrote Ivey.

Trump on Sunday ordered public entities to lower the U.S. flag to half-staff as “a sign of respect for the service and sacrifice of United States Capitol Police Officers Brian D. Sicknick and Howard Liebengood, and all Capitol Police Officers and law enforcement across this great Nation.”

This came after National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day was commemorated on Saturday.
