U.S. Sen. Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) is being lauded for her support of law enforcement and work to combat crime in America.
On Thursday, she received the Crime Stopper of the Year Award from Crime Stoppers of Metro Alabama.
The organization chose Britt for this year’s award because of her introduction and sponsorship of the “Laken Riley Act,” a bill mandating that any illegal immigrants guilty of theft, burglary, larceny, and/or shoplifting must be detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The legislation received bipartisan support and was signed into law by President Trump
“The work done by the Crime Stoppers of Metro Alabama is truly invaluable, and I’m honored to be recognized by them for my work in the Senate,” Britt said. “Fighting for the safety of Alabamians and advocating for our law enforcement agencies at every level is a true honor and privilege. Whether it was leading the bipartisan Laken Riley Act, the most significant immigration enforcement and border security legislation to be signed into law in nearly 30 years, or advancing critical funding through the appropriations process, I will always fight to keep Americans and Alabamians safe.”
Crime Stoppers is a nonprofit organization dedicated to making Metro Alabama safer by serving as a bridge between law enforcement and the community. Crime Stoppers offers cash rewards for information that leads to the arrest of wanted individuals, and tipsters always remain 100% anonymous.
“In Washington and here at home, Senator Britt has been relentless in addressing violent crime, and she understands that the rule of law is not just a principle-it is the very safeguard of our freedom,” Crime Stoppers Board Chairman Frank Barefield said in a statement. “Her work has not been about what is easy-it has been about what is right. She has confronted some of the most difficult and emotional topics we face as a nation, including cracking down on repeat violent offenders, strengthening penalties for those who target our children, and ensuring that those who would harm our citizens are met with swift justice.”
Recently, Senator Britt advanced $14.4 million to support local law enforcement and other crucial projects across Alabama. As Chair of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security, she is proud to support Trump’s recent efforts to make D.C. safe and beautiful again.
“Perhaps no better example of her commitment can be found in her leadership supporting the Laken Riley Act, legislation named for a young woman whose life was tragically taken by a 26-year-old undocumented immigrant,” Barefield continued.
“Senator Britt fought to see this bill passed so that those who illegally enter the United States to commit violent crimes and harm innocent people are removed from our communities and so that the loss of life like Laken is never repeated.
