ESPN: Saban to retire

University of Alabama head football coach Nick Saban is retiring, ESPN’s Chris Low reported this afternoon.

Saban won six national championships in his time at Alabama — seven overall. He took over as head coach in 2007 and won his first national championship in 2009.

“Saban just informed his team that he’s retiring,” Low also tweeted.

Saban has won nine SEC championships, most recently leading the Crimson Tide to an 11-1 season in which they were SEC champions, undefeated in the conference, and competed in the Rose Bowl.

Saban maintains a 292-71-1 record in 28 seasons as an FBS head coach.
