An Alabama woman was arrested for trying to smuggle drugs into the William C. Holman Correctional Facility in Atmore in February — using a drone.
On Wednesday, the Alabama Department of Corrections announced narcotics agents with the Law Enforcement Services Division were able to secure seven charges this week against Andrea Robinson.
Robinson was transported to the Escambia County Jail and charged with two counts of attempting to commit a controlled substance crime, two counts of marijuana possession, two counts of illegal drone operation, and one count of promoting prison contraband.
Additional charges may still come down as the investigation continues to be carried out.
What kind of sentencing Robinson may face remains uncertain given the unusual nature of the crime, but drone-assisted smuggling attempts are far from isolated. According to a 2023 report from the U.S. Department of Justice, the use of drones to deliver contraband into prisons has become an increasingly frequent and sophisticated threat nationwide.
