Doug Jones: Third party presidential bids ‘threat to democracy’

Former U.S. Sen. Doug Jones ganged up on Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan over his promotion of the idea that third-party candidates viably “offer an alternative” to 2024 presidential nominees.

He took a swipe at No Labels in the process.

“So if @GovLarryHogan is interested in choices why doesn’t he challenge Trump in the Republican primaries? It appears he has given up on the Republican Party and the Republican voters. Kinda tells you where the party is these days,” Jones said.

“He knows full well that a third party cannot get 270 electoral votes but yet continues this fantasy about No Labels.  It’s actually pretty sad – but also a dangerous threat to democracy.”

Last month, Jones squared off against former Sen. Joe Lieberman, a founding member of No Labels on ABC’s “This Week.”

“There is no way on God’s green earth that they can get to 270 electoral votes, which means they will be a spoiler, one way or another,” Jones said of a No Labels ticket.

“I don’t know why in the world somebody thinks that Joe Biden’s administration is so far left, unlike a Donald Trump or someone else that is an extreme right.”

Lieberman said, “We’re not in this to be spoilers.”

Jones made the case that the more choices on the ballot means a threat to not only his longtime friend and likely party nominee, Joe Biden, but also “a dangerous threat to democracy.”

“Those (Biden vs. Trump) polls right now mean nothing,” Jones told Lieberman. “This past weekend, you saw that the Biden-Harris team raised $70 million, 30% of those were new donors. That is not a candidate that is being rejected by the American people.

“Look at what he has done, bringing the infrastructure package together, pulling that together for the first time in decades to do infrastructure, for the PACT Act [for veterans], the CHIPS Act [for manufacturing].”
