Ask anyone with a brain how Alabama elected a liberal Democrat to the United State Senate in 2017 and they will give you one answer: Roy Moore was tarnished with a believable scandal and absurd claims that he was a “child molester.”

Somehow, the main benefactor of Roy Moore’s issues and the mainstream media’s Roy Moore obsession, Sen. Doug Jones (D-Mountain Brook), is pretending he doesn’t know that?

He told AL.com that the coverage of Roy Moore didn’t help him, adding, “When that story broke, I didn’t think it would help me. I think the election became much more tribal at that point. People went into their corners and said it was fake news.”

Let’s be clear — that is a total lie.

Alabama’s senior senator, Richard Shelby, and some other Republicans called on Alabama Republicans to stay home, vote Jones or write in someone else.

As if that wasn’t dumb enough, one of Jones’ media strategists Joe Trippi believes the story helped Moore.

“We saw the initial reactions to the accusations was for people to go back to their corners,” said Trippi. “It had this opposite effect of what the talking heads thought, and didn’t make (the voters) move toward Doug Jones initially.”

If Trump told a lie this absurd, he would get “Bottomless Pinocchios” from the Washington Post, and he would deserve them.

The math here is quite simple. Republicans stayed home in 2017; they did so because they credibly believed Roy Moore was accused of creepy behavior decades before.

For a year, Democrats in Alabama pretended that state was trending in their direction but, even though the Republicans did terribly nationwide, they showed up and voted red in Alabama.

These unproven allegations are why Doug Jones is a United States senator.

Period.

Any person that tells you anything different is either lying or they are out of touch with Alabama politics.
