Doug Jones announced as DNC headline speaker along with Clintons, Obamas, more

U.S. Senator Doug Jones (D-AL) is set to be a featured speaker at the 2020 Democratic National Convention.

MSNBC reported that Jones will speak on the first night of the convention, this coming Monday, August 17.

Other speakers that same night will include U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and former First Lady Michelle Obama.

The next night will include former President Bill Clinton, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), former Secretary of State John Kerry and former Second Lady Jill Biden.

Wednesday night will then see the likes of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), the 2020 Democratic vice presidential nominee and former President Barack Obama speak.

Finally, the convention will conclude on Thursday night. Speakers will include U.S. Senators Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Kamala Harris (D-CA), along with former Vice President Joe Biden — the presumptive 2020 Democratic nominee for president.

All featured speakers will address the convention remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A release from the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) said Jones speaking at the DNC is indicative that he is auditioning for a Biden cabinet spot.

“Anti-Trump Democrat Doug Jones has given up running for re-election in Alabama,” said NRSC spokesperson Paige Lindgren. “By hitching his wagon to the DNC and Joe Biden, he’s turning his back on Alabama voters. It’s clear he’s now focused more on securing a potential cabinet post in the Biden administration than representing Alabaman’s values.”

Jones was an early endorser of Biden’s 2020 presidential bid and has defended him during some of the most controversial moments of the campaign, including when Biden was accused of sexual assault by former staffer Tara Reade.
