HOMEWOOD – Republican state representative Paul DeMarco, R-Homewood, on Sunday night announced his candidacy for Alabama’s Sixth Congressional District.

DeMarco currently serves as chairman of the Judiciary Committee in the Alabama House of Representatives and the Joint Oversight Committee for Alabama Homeland Security, as well as Co-Chair of the Jefferson County House legislative Delegation.

In order to run for Congress, he will be not be able to seek re-election to the state house.

“Since 2005, I’ve worked hard in the Alabama Legislature to represent the people with conservative, reform minded principles that are now needed in Congress,” DeMarco said in a statement Sunday night. “I have supported common sense and practical ways to make local and state government work best for the people of Alabama.”

DeMarco is a partner in the law firm of Parsons, Lee and Juliano, P.C. He graduated from Auburn University in 1990 and received his law degree from the University of Alabama in 1993. He currently lives in Homewood with his wife, Jacqueline.

“The Sixth District is a special place for Jacqueline and me. It is our home,” DeMarco said. “I share the values of the many small businesses and hardworking families who also call this home. Those values and the dedication to strengthening the communities of the Sixth District are why I can make a difference in Congress.”

AL-06 is one of the most solidly Republican congressional district in the country. The Cook Political Index rates the district as R+28, meaning a Republican would start with a 28-point lead over a Democrat on a generic ballot.

DeMarco joins orthopedic surgeon Chad Mathis and Alabama Policy Institute founder Gary Palmer as the only officially announced candidates to this point. Several more Republican are expected to announce in the near future.
