Gov. Kay Ivey (R-AL) on Monday called for a special election for House District 63. The seat is now vacant due to the governor’s appointment of former State Representative Bill Poole (R-Tuscaloosa) as the Director of Finance. His resignation was effective July 31, 2021.

The special primary election will be held on Tuesday, October 19, 2021.

The Secretary of State’s office says candidates will have until Tuesday, August 17, 2021, to qualify with a major political party and declare their candidacy. The release notes that independent candidates and minor parties must submit the appropriate number of petition signatures to the Office of the Secretary of State no later than Tuesday, October 19, 2021.

If no qualified candidate of either party garners more than 50% of all votes cast, a special primary runoff election will be held on Tuesday, November 16, 2021.

The special general election will be held on Tuesday, February 1, 2022.

For the special primary election, the deadline to register to vote is Monday, October 4, 2021. Eligible Alabamians can register to vote online at AlabamaVotes.gov, on the mobile app “Vote for Alabama” or by visiting their local Board of Registrars’ office.

House District 63 encompasses Tuscaloosa, Northport and greater Tuscaloosa County.
