A dark money group tied to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) began running Alabama ads to boost U.S. Senator Doug Jones (D-AL) on Monday, the same day that Jones was set to make featured remarks at the Democratic National Convention.

As first reported by Politico, Duty and Honor has launched a $500,000 television advertising blitz in support of Jones’ Yellowhammer State reelection bid.

It has previously been revealed that Duty and Honor is one group in a web of Washington, D.C.-based political entities aligned with Senate Democratic leadership. Registered as a 501(c)(4) nonprofit, Duty and Honor does not have to reveal its donors through FEC filings and is able to spend unlimited money through independent expenditures.

Along with Schumer-tied groups such as Majority Forward, Duty and Honor’s goal is to flip the Senate from Republican to Democratic control.

The end result of these efforts, if successful, would be U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-AL) losing the powerful chairmanship of the Senate Committee on Appropriations and Alabama losing the unprecedented influence that this position entails.

Speaking to Politico earlier this year, Jones welcomed the inevitable support of these outside groups.

Jones is running in November’s general election against Republican nominee Tommy Tuberville.

Ahead of Jones’ Monday night DNC remarks, National Republican Senatorial Committee spokesperson Paige Lindgren stated, “Anti-Trump Democrat Doug Jones has turned his attention from representing the values of Alabama to a potential cabinet spot in a Biden-Harris administration.”

“Jones’ speech this evening will show the nation that he is another Anti-Trump, pro-abortion, anti-gun Washington liberal, who doesn’t share the values of Alabamians,” she added. “His speaking on the same night as Bernie Sanders is reminder of who he counts as allies.”
