Dan Lanning likes, then unlikes, tweet saying he hasn’t been in Tuscaloosa

Nick Saban’s retirement has created a social media firestorm. From false flight trackers to people claiming to have information on team meetings being pushed, everyone is trying to find out what is going on with a coaching search that will shape the next decade-plus of the sport.

Rumors circulated last night, including a report that Oregon head coach Dan Lanning was already in Tuscaloosa to interview for the job with University of Alabama Athletic Director Greg Byrne.

Apparently, this was never accurate. Josh Pate of CBS Sports posted at 9:33 a.m. central time on Thursday morning saying Lanning has not been in Tuscaloosa at all this week.

Lanning liked the tweet from his personal account.

More interestingly, Lanning unliked the tweet just minutes later.

Given that a profile’s likes on Twitter/X is public, any user is able to see that Lanning had the tweet liked for a period of time.

This can be interpreted a few different ways and does not necessarily indicate anything regarding whether or not Lanning is going to be hired for the job — but it does at least confirm that the reports that he was already in Tuscaloosa are false.
