U.S. Rep. Dale Strong (R-Monrovia) is demanding answers from the Department of Homeland Security on the security failures leading to the attempted assassination against former President Donald Trump.

Strong and his colleagues on the House Homeland Security Committee are calling on DHS Secretary Mayorkas, FBI Director Christopher Wray, and Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to testify before the committee soon.

“Following the attempted assassination of President Trump,” Strong said on X, “I am working diligently with my @HomelandGOP colleagues to get the American people the answers they deserve.”

Rep. Strong also spoke to the need for a full investigation in an interview at the Republican National Convention:

House Homeland Security Committee Chairman U.S. Rep. Mark Green (R-Tenn.) sent a letter to the leaders asking them to testify on July 23.

“The seriousness of this security failure and chilling moment in our nation’s history cannot be understated,” said the letter. “No assassination attempt has come so close to taking the life of a president or presidential candidate since President Reagan was shot in 1981. Had the bullet’s trajectory been slightly different, the assassination attempt on President Trump might have succeeded. As the U.S. Secret Service (USSS) investigates, the Committee on Homeland Security (Committee) is dedicated to conducting rigorous oversight to ensure that the American people receive answers and presidential candidates receive proper and adequate protection.”

This is one of many House and Senate committees that have officially launched investigations into the assassination attempt.

“According to the USSS, the shooter ‘fired multiple shots toward the stage from an elevated position outside of the rally venue.’ This raises serious concerns regarding how a shooter was able to access a rooftop within range and direct line of sight of where President Trump was speaking,” the letter added. “Additionally, some reporting, suggests that the Department of Homeland Security (Department) ‘rebuffed’ multiple requests from President Trump’s security detail to increase protective resources in the weeks preceding this event.”
