Alabama Crimson Tide walk-on sophomore and Pittsburgh native Kai Spears has been offered a scholarship, according to a report from BamaCentral.

Allowed 13 scholarships, Nate Oats only rostered 12 scholarship players this season, leaving a spot open for a walk-on athlete to earn a scholarship during the season.

Spears has played in 13 minutes this season as a walk-on during the end of games that had already effectively been decided, and has recorded six points and an assist during those minutes.

Senior forward Max Scharnowski and freshman Ward Harrell are the other two walk-ons who remain on the roster.

Spears, who is the son of Marshall athletic director Christian Spears, was falsely associated last season with the shooting death of Jamea Jonae Harris, 23, on January 15th that ended with one player on the team being charged with capital murder.

The New York Times had alleged that Spears was in one of the vehicles present at the scene, a report that led to a defamation suit being filed by Spears’ family against the publication.

After not seeing the floor in his freshman season last year, Spears has at least three full years of eligibility remaining.
