U.S. Rep. Robert Aderholt recently responded to reports of four Social Security office closures in Alabama. The decision is part of a nationwide effort to reduce costs and transition to virtual services.

Additionally, the Social Security Administration (SSA) is eliminating 7,000 positions across the country, raising concerns among Alabama residents about how these changes will impact them.

Aderholt (R-Haleyville) clarified that while adjustments are being made, the affected offices will remain open. The reported closures primarily involve the cancellation of lease agreements for hearing spaces, not the areas used for daily operations. According to Aderholt, Social Security hearings have moved to virtual platforms, leaving these spaces unused while taxpayers continue to cover the rent.

“These changes will not impact residents’ ability to access Social Security services at these locations,” he said.

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which oversees federal resource management, is involved in these cost-cutting measures. However, Aderholt emphasized that the agency’s actions are not intended to reduce essential programs like Social Security, which Americans have paid into throughout their working lives.

To address concerns, Aderholt’s office remains in contact with the SSA to ensure services remain accessible. He also reaffirmed his commitment to protecting these programs and advocating for the needs of Alabama communities.
