BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — After hearing from hundreds of distressed senior citizens across Central Alabama during the extreme July climate over the last several weeks, United Way of Central Alabama through a program called “Senior Cool” has teamed up with other area to distribute fans to help beat the heat.
Senior Cool and United Way are working together through the charity’s 2-1-1 program, which provides information and assistance through local call centers.
United Way of Central Alabama says the fans will be distributed to seniors through three Senior Cool partner organizations; The Christian Service Mission; The Middle Alabama Area Agency on Aging M4A and the Jefferson County Office of Senior Citizens Services in conjunction with their Meals on Wheels Program.
If you or a senior you know needs a little help keeping cool this summer, just dial 2-1-1 (in some areas you’ll need to dial 1-888-421-1266) to connect to United Way’s 2-1-1 Information and Referral Center.
Those wanting to donate to help Senior Cool can text the word FANS to the mobile number 41444 to help keep homebound seniors cool, healthy and comfortable as temperatures are still expected to exceed 90 degrees throughout the rest of the summer and the current supply is expected to run out.
