Here’s a new rule to apply to aspiring presidential candidates: If you have to say you’re considering a run this early, you’re likely not in the top-tier candidate pool. For the third tier candidate, being coy is a vice — not a virtue. Take John Bolton, the former U.N. ambassador known for his trademark bushy […]

The Alabama Republican Party will play host to Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker on Friday night at their annual summer dinner. The Party has had some luck with the timing of their speakers in recent years. Texas Gov. Rick Perry spoke to a record crowd in Birmingham in 2011 just a day before he announced his […]

On the final day of business at the Republican National Committee’s summer meeting, the RNC passed a resolution sponsored by Alabama’s National Committeeman Paul Reynolds lambasting the President’s energy policies and expressing support for the coal industry. The resolution “calls upon President Obama, his administration and the Environmental Protection Agency to rescind their misguided and […]

Virginia gap: Biden trails Christie

Contributor Ellie Cohen dove into Joe Biden’s polling problem last week, highlighting how his nomination would increase the odds of Republicans taking back the White House in 2016. There’s new evidence out of Virginia — part of the Holy Trinity of battleground states — that lends more credence to the case. In hypothetical match-ups against Chris Christie […]

An amendment proposed last week to the bylaws of the Alabama Republican Party would have removed from the Party’s steering committee any member who publicly supports a position contrary to the most recent GOP platform, which was adopted during the 2012 Republican National Convention. Congressional candidate Dean Young made his position on gay marriage crystal clear yesterday during an interview with Mobile’s local NBC affiliate. “I’m against homosexuals pretending like they’re married,” he said during an on-camera interview, which can be seen above. Young feels like current members of Congress are not doing enough to protect traditional marriage. “Congress […]

Then-president Richard Nixon secretly taped all of his White House conversations from February 1971 until July 1973. As part of a legal agreement signed in the mid-90s not long after Nixon’s death, the tapes have been periodically released in batches since then. The final 340 hours of those tapes was released this week, revealing some […]

Clyburn made the comments Wednesday afternoon in […]

PSC turns its attention to Alagasco

Prior to The Alabama Public Service Commission’s decision to lower rates for Alabama Power customers last week, it had been a quarter century since major changes had been made to Alabama Power’s rate setting structure. The Commission has now turned its attention to Alagasco, which hasn’t seen significant changes in its rate setting mechanism since […]

None of the Republican members of Alabama’s U.S. House delegation have indicated that they’ll be signing on to the idea of using Congress’ federal budget powers to defund ObamaCare. In fact, the conservative Heritage Foundation recently launched an ad campaign targeting a handful those Republicans nationally, including five of the state’s six Republicans locally. One […]

On August 6, the Alabama Policy Institute received a letter from Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) inquiring into the Institute’s affiliation with the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), and specifically ALEC’s support of “stand your ground” laws. It’s a thousand degrees outside, it won’t stop raining, and I was mauled last night by a vicious animal I found out later was actually a mosquito. I can’t think of a time I was more in need of some Christmas cheer. State Senator Gerald Allen told Yellowhammer Wednesday that he has pre-filed a bill […]

It took only hours after my story posted last November for the emails to stack up: Ted Cruz can’t run for president, he’s Canadian, they screamed. Just weeks after his unlikely election in Texas, the senator-elect was already dropping hints he had greater ambitions by diagnosing his party’s ills and prescribing solutions for the future in a […]

Burton LeFlore, Democratic candidate for Congress in Alabama’s First District, has an uphill battle ahead of him if he hopes to become the first Democrat to hold the seat since LBJ was occupying the Oval Office. Cook Political Report rates the First District “R+15,” meaning a generic Republican candidate would start with a 15-point advantage […]
