For thirteen years, the beloved “tax-free weekend” has allowed Alabama shoppers to purchase school-related products and clothing without having to pay the state’s four percent sales tax. Many cities and counties also participate in waiving their sales taxes, making the products altogether tax-free. There are some limitations, however:

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey is ordering flags lowered to half-staff to honor victims of the shooting at a newspaper in Annapolis, Maryland. Ivey’s office issued a statement saying flags will be lowered through sunset Tuesday to show respect for the five people who were killed at The Capital Gazette last week.

Authorities say a high school teacher in eastern Alabama is facing a sex charge involving a student. The Auburn-Opelika News reports that 24-year-old Beauregard High School teacher Hunter Herring Armstrong of Auburn was arrested Monday.

Authorities are searching for a prisoner who they say has escaped from the Tennessee Highway Patrol’s custody. Franklin police and the highway patrol tell news outlets in tweets and statements that 31-year-old Joseph Perkins was being walked into the Williamson County jail early Friday when he assaulted a trooper outside and ran away.
