Did we win the trade war?

President Trump recently announced a partial trade settlement with China. Does this mean we have won the trade war? Details remain sparse, and the present deal may merely forestall further tariff hikes. It may be a truce rather than a peace treaty. Nonetheless, avoiding escalation of the trade war is good news.

The opioid epidemic is one of our country’s most dire ongoing issues. The term is one that has become too familiar in our everyday lives. Unfortunately, this epidemic is tragically taking the precious lives of Americans across the country, including those of Alabamians in the Second Congressional District. As an elected official, I believe that […]

WASHINGTON, D.C. — As most folks have seen on the news lately, House Democrats are continuing their behind closed doors drive toward impeachment. As they try to tear down and remove our president from the highest office in the world, every day Americans are left in the dark, only to hear bits and pieces that […]

Tuberville: Our mental health plan is broken -- Let's fix it

Tommy Tuberville: Mental health in America is broken. The federal government controls the funding for mental health care, but currently...

Modern political candidates spend a lot of time presenting themselves as culturally acceptable to voters. That means a lot of talk about God, faith, and family, and often the winning candidate is the one who looks best driving a well-worn pickup truck. This is nothing new in American politics, but it’s a practice that is […]

For weeks, Democrats have been holding secretive impeachment proceedings behind closed doors, out of sight of the American people. Chairman Adam Schiff of the House Select Committee on Intelligence has been interviewing witnesses in a restricted area deep beneath the Capitol in a small room called a Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility, known as a SCIF. […]

For just over a month now, Alabama officials have not issued marriage licenses. They instead record certificates memorializing marital contracts, signed by married couples and notarized. The law authorizing this change is a sensible and principled compromise. Indeed, it might be a model for other states. It accommodates both the opinion of the U.S. Supreme […]

Roby: Staying alert against fraudulent scams

Every day, we consume information in a variety of ways from our cell phone screens to our computers. With having several types of options available, the amount of content can be overwhelming and easily inundate even the most avid consumer. The ability to understand if information is fraudulent or real is becoming ever more difficult […]

We have two men who were elected to statewide constitutional offices last year who seem to be doing a good job. They are both working quietly and diligently in their new posts. Rick Pate was sworn in as the state’s Agriculture Commissioner in January. He followed John McMillan, who served eight years as Agriculture Commissioner. […]

It’s an idea that we Evangelicals like because we usually hear it discussed in the vein of protecting our particular right to express and live out a Christian worldview. But do we really know what our constitutional right to religious liberty is rooted in, and what protecting it for the long haul will require of […]

Seth Hammett: There is no such thing as a free lunch. That’s never been truer than in the current push to force the removal of coal ash from one...

Byrne: How do you solve a problem like Syria?

Recent developments in Syria highlight the need for the United States to revisit its broader Middle Eastern policy. Early last week, I joined a small meeting of House Republicans for an update on Syria from Secretary of Defense Mark Esper where he discussed a phone call from President Erdogan of Turkey to President Trump. During […]

The persistent problem of hazing

Two Troy University fraternities were recently suspended for hazing, which is a recurring problem at our nation’s colleges. According to Wikipedia, 20 college students have died in hazing incidents this decade. Economics can offer insight into how initiation rituals help build groups and why hazing persists. In addition to fraternities and sororities, bands, sports teams, […]

Rep. Martha Roby: An update on progress for Afghan women

Throughout my time in Congress, I have had the privilege to serve on several committees that directly influence our country’s defense and foreign policy initiatives, namely the House Armed Services Committee and the House Appropriations Committee. Most recently, this Congress, I was asked to serve on the State and Foreign Operations Appropriations Subcommittee. In this […]

The nature of reality through liberal eyes

I have been watching and listening to the news during President Donald Trump’s entire administration and I’m done. Break out the honey-do list at home, save me a seat at the library, and open the trails in the mountains for hiking because I can no longer watch, read or listen to this cacophony of liberal […]

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The big story in Washington right now is happening behind closed doors. House Democrats continue to conduct this sham of an impeachment in a manner that is not open to the public or the media. The only news every-day Americans are allowed to have is cherry-picked by the radical Democrats and then […]

One of the most outstanding congressmen and leaders in Alabama history is Congressman Jack Edwards. He passed away three weeks ago at age 91. He was born with the full name of William Jackson Edwards, III. However, he was always known as Jack. Although he was renowned as a Mobile/Baldwin County congressman, he was born […]

Black Alabamians should reject Doug Jones in 2020

"Doug Jones’ philosophy -- one that assumes guilt when accusations are made -- is one that leads to the unjust imprisonment of men who look like me."

Sometimes, Congress comes up with a bill that would be bad news for Alabama’s small businesses. This time, though, it’s come up with three competing bills, each even worse than the other. In the House, we have the Corporate Transparency Act of 2019. In the Senate, there’s the ILLICIT CASH Act and the TITLE Act. […]

Byrne: Congress must investigate the escalating Biden scandal

While Democrats recklessly intensify their partisan scheme to impeach President Trump, the Biden scandal has escalated to a level Congress can no longer responsibly ignore. As more details come out regarding Hunter Biden’s business dealings overseas, their connection with actions taken by his father, Joe Biden, in his official capacity as vice president raise new […]

Alabama’s competitive edge in the new economy

Alabama has a proud history of fostering innovation and inspiring great ideas that have transformed how we live, work and do business. From the Saturn V rocket that took us to the moon to Shipt’s grocery delivery app that has now become a household name. Through the leadership of Representative Bill Poole and Senator Greg […]

It’s hard to believe we’re already halfway through the month of October. November will be here before we know it, and with it comes Veterans Day. This is a uniquely special holiday, and as it approaches, I encourage you to take some time to reflect on the endless sacrifices made by those who have worn […]

The second year of the reign of Governor Kay Ivey may give her a second major accomplishment in the first two years of her term as governor. In her first year, she spearheaded the measure to increase the state’s gasoline tax in order to allow Alabama to proceed with a much-needed massive infrastructure program labeled […]

Is it payday for college athletes?

California recently passed a law allowing college athletes to receive compensation. This stokes anew the debate about paying college athletes and may provide an example of competition between governments producing legal change. Whether college athletes should be paid provokes strong responses. On the one hand, student-athletes already receive numerous benefits, including a scholarship and tutoring […]
