Ivey hopes Newsom ‘enjoys’ visit to Alabama

According to a report from the Associated Press, Californian Gov. Gavin Newsom will be making a few stops throughout the South beginning in Alabama next week. Many throughout the country expect that Newsom could be gearing up for a possible presidential run in 2024.

Upon his arrival, he is expected to meet with the state’s Democratic leaders to discuss Medicaid expansion and the growing fight against conservative educational proposals, including school choice.

Yellowhammer News reached out to Gov. Kay Ivey’s office for a comment on Newsom’s visit.

In her response, Ivey welcomed him.

“Governor Newsom certainly won’t be the first to flee California for Alabama — hope he enjoys his stay!” she said.

Newsom has said that what’s happening in Red States is both “un-American” and “un-democratic.”

However, as of now, he is saying that he has no interest in being president and fully supports President Biden running in 2024.

“It’s not my ambition,” he said. “It’s not the direction that I’m leaning into. It’s not the moment.

“I don’t think there’s been two years of more effective policy-making of a modern American president. It’s been a masterclass the last two years, not necessarily in effective communication and generating narrative, but in terms of the substance under the circumstance, with all the headwinds, the obfuscation and opposition. I think it’s been remarkable.”

Along with the announcement of the visits, came the news that Newsom dropped $10 million into his own new political action committee, Campaign for Democracy. The PAC announced its formation through a video featuring Newsom, in which he labeled conservative leaders as authoritarian leaders and said that they were directly attacking Americans’ “freedoms.”
