Calhoun County will soon offer a safe haven for homeless animals through the planned purchase of the OneWorld Pet Resort and boarding facility. The County Commission recently announced its intent to buy the 38-acre property for $2 million and convert it into a community animal shelter and adoption center.

The acquisition is expected to significantly enhance the county’s ability to care for and rehome animals in need. According to the commission, the goal is to provide humane and cost-effective services for both residents and animals.

“This is a fiscally smart investment that gives us a turnkey facility at a fraction of the cost of building a new one,” said County Commission Chairman Terry Howell. “It allows us to elevate animal care, expand adoptions, and engage the community in ways we’ve never been able to before.”

The existing facility includes more than 150 kennel runs, pet amenities, outdoor parks, and walking trails. Beyond functioning as a shelter and adoption center, the property is envisioned as a long-term community hub for animal welfare and pet owners.

The Calhoun County Commission will hold a public hearing on August 7 at 10:00 a.m. at the Ken Joiner Calhoun County Administration Building in Anniston to gather input from residents on the matter.
