Inside-the-beltway publication Roll Call had a contest going last night to see which member of the House or Senate could give the best 3-word response to President Barack Obama’s State of the Union Address. Using the hashtag #SOTUin3words, the Twitterverse was abuzz with witty responses from both sides of the aisle.
“Redundant imperial president,” said Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn.
“Resolute, clear, visionary,” intoned Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla.
Sadly, several members of congress couldn’t wrap their head around the idea that “State of the Union in 3 Words” means you can only use, well, 3 words.
“Home run for America,” said Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md.
“Applause lines don’t equal substance,” Rep. Bill Cassidy, R-La., added, rules be danged.
Fortunately for Alabama, our delegation had a clue.
The three words Sen. Richard Shelby used to describe it were, “Likable, no substance.”
But the best response of the night, according to Roll Call and pretty much anyone else paying attention, came from Alabama’s newest congressman, Bradley Byrne, who had just been hanging out with Willie Robertson of Duck Dynasty fame.
“Lame duck quacking,” Byrne said.
Nailed it.
