As President Biden continues to criticize “MAGA Republicans” as extremists and a “threat to Democracy,” some Republicans are fighting back against the narrative.
During a Democratic fundraising event that took place in Maryland at the end of August, Biden said “What we’re seeing now is either the beginning or the death knell of an extreme MAGA philosophy. It’s not just Trump, it’s the entire philosophy that underpins the — I’m going to say something — it’s like semi-fascism.”
Thursday, Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Huntsville) responded to the president’s remarks on WVNN’s “The Yaffee Program.”
“If you look at what fascism is,” Brooks said, “it’s more government dictatorial control. That’s Democrats’ policies and positions hand in glove. It’s Democrats who are the ones to tend to be more fascist because fascism is the opposite of liberty and freedom and the Democrats don’t trust us to make our own decisions. They believe the government should be doing it.”
The congressman said this is just a partisan political strategy by the administration to help Democrat candidates win in the midterm elections.
“It’s typical of what happens in September and October before a November election,” he said. “The Democrats are trying to push the hot button issues in order to motivate their supporters to turn out to the polls. The Republicans do similar things but on different issues, and you’re seeing the Democrats doing it right now on the fascism argument that they advance.”
Brooks admitted the strategy seems to helping the Democratic candidates gain support in this election cycle.
“Quite frankly, at least so far during the 2022 calendar year, their strategy seems to be fairly effective,” he said. “Normally, you would expect the Democrats to lose the house by a wide margin and also lose the Senate, but as you’re seeing from the last couple of months, the Democrats have had a resurgence in the polls and now it’s a very competitive House setting, and then it looks the Democrats are going to keep the Senate, maybe expand on their majority in the Senate, with there still being an outside chance Republicans will take control of the Senate.
“Still two months to go, so lots going to happen over those two months.”
The lawmaker also called on Republicans to stop caving to special interest groups and do more to stop the Democrats and help the American people.
“Quit being puppets of special interests,” he said. “Simple as that. Do what’s in the best interest of America….the public interest is there, and it does have some influence, but it’s minor compared to the domination by the special interests, and quite frankly the only difference between the Republicans and the Democrats is who their special interest masters are.”
