Britt says in vitro fertilization is pro-family, ‘deserves protection’

(U.S. Senator Katie Britt)

Last week’s ruling by the Alabama Supreme Court that specified embryos created through in vitro fertilization are considered children, and therefore protected by the Alabama Constitution, is receiving attention from officials across state and party lines.

U.S. Sen. Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) expressed her support for the one-in-six Americans who struggle with infertility while remaining a defender of the unborn.

“Make no mistake — defending life and ensuring continued access to IVF services for loving parents are not mutually exclusive,” Britt said.

The 7-2 ruling, permitting three couples to pursue wrongful death lawsuits following the destruction of their frozen embryos at a fertility clinic, led several providers of IVF treatment, including the UAB Health System, to suspend their services, citing concerns over potential prosecution.

“My goal is for Alabama to be the best place in the world to live, work, worship, and raise a family,” Britt said. “Ultimately, IVF helps create life and grow families, and it deserves the protection of the law. I’ll continue to advance a culture of life while ensuring moms and children have the opportunities and resources they need to thrive and live their American Dream.”
