U.S. Sen.-elect Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) has slammed Big Tech’s efforts to conspire with Democrats to censor conservatives over the recent release of Twitter files.
“The Twitter files confirm what we already knew to be true: that Big Tech has systemically colluded with their allies in the Democratic Party to help them control the public square, gain power, and win elections,” said Britt. “These revelations also exemplify why there is such a backlash to Elon Musk’s newfound ownership and leadership of Twitter — he’s giving the American people a look behind the curtain, and those at the levers of power on the left are desperate to stop the truth from coming out.
“I look forward to congressional hearings getting to the bottom of what occurred at Twitter in 2020, as well as probing the practices of other social media outlets and ensuring transparency and accountability.”
Last Friday, Musk, the Twitter CEO, unveiled the social media platform’s efforts to suppress conservative speech during the height of the 2020 presidential election.
The reveal, known as the Twitter files, unveiled that the Silicon Valley giant communicated with Democratic operatives to censor the now-verified New York Post report of the contents found on Hunter Biden’s laptop.
Free speech and the ability to disseminate opinion is “crucial to our democratic process,” Britt said.
“My message to my friends across the aisle is this: censoring conservatives is anything but progressive,” she said. “Diversity of thought and opinion are pillars of America, and the free flow of speech, ideas, and information is crucial to our democratic process. We should be encouraging debate and the exchange of opposing viewpoints, not stifling it.”
Britt said she will work alongside her upper chamber colleagues to reform Section 230 of the “Communications Decency Act” in an effort to protect user speech.
“There is no doubt that what Twitter did in 2020 has undermined many Americans’ faith in our elections and our institutions,” she said. “Our country’s leaders, on a nonpartisan basis, have a responsibility to strengthen our processes and our laws to restore that faith and ensure this never happens again.
“To that end, I look forward to working with my colleagues in the Senate to achieve much-needed reforms to Section 230.”
