Britt: ‘I’ll say it again, amnesty should never be on the table’

The Biden Administration sent two high ranking officials to Mexico this week to meet with the country’s president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, to address the illegal immigration crisis at the border.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas reportedly floated the idea during the meeting of “regularizing” or providing amnesty to all illegal immigrants in the U.S.

Upon learning of what was discussed at the meeting, Republicans in the Senate and House were quick to condemn the possibility of mass amnesty.

Sen. Katie Britt, part of that group, issued her opinion on the subject.

“Amnesty would reward — and incentivize further — illegal migration. This kind of signal from the Biden Administration only pours more fuel on their already catastrophic crisis,” Britt (R-Montgomery) said. “I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: amnesty should never be on the table.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson called the suggestion of regularization “unconscionable.”

“At a time when America is experiencing the worst border crisis in our nation’s history, it is unconscionable to hear the Biden Administration’s announcement that Secretaries Mayorkas and Blinken discussed with the President of Mexico amnesty for illegal immigrants,” Johnson said.

“The United States must focus on policies that deter – not attract people attempting to come here illegally, and the smugglers who profit from the catastrophe at our border.”
