Britt votes against ‘wokeness’ in DoD

It was a milestone moment Monday for U.S. Sen. Katie Britt.

The freshman senator cast her first in the Senate – a “nay” vote on the confirmation of Brendan Owens to serve as assistant secretary for Energy, Installations and Environment in the Department of Defense.

However, the Senate confirmed Owens in a 60-35 vote with 13 Republicans joining 47 Democrats in voting for the nominee.

“The Biden Administration has consistently prioritized their reckless leftwing political agenda to the detriment of our military readiness,” Britt said. “This nominee would simply be the tip of the spear in continuing President Biden’s radical ‘Green New Deal’ priorities at the Department of Defense, which should be focused on ensuring our incredible men and women in uniform are the best equipped, resourced, and trained in the world.”

Owens was originally nominated by President Joe Biden last March but failed to muster the support to get a floor vote during the 117th Congress. Biden re-nominated Owens at the start of this session.

“We achieve peace through strength, not wokeness,” Britt said. “The last thing we need is a DoD appointee from the ESG (environmental, social and governance) movement.”
