ALABASTER, Ala. — 19 year old Alabamian Jacob Russell Durant went on quite the joyride on Friday, January 16th—and it might land him in prison for 20 years.
According to NBC 13, Shelby County deputies were alerted at around 11pm Friday evening that a military Humvee was barreling down the road in the wrong direction with its lights off. Deputies soon intercepted Durant, and arrested him.
An investigation determined that the Humvee was stolen from Birmingham’s Army Reserves station.
Durant is charged with a first-degree felony count of receiving stolen property, which can carry up to 20 years in federal prison.
The Humvee, or High Mobility Multi-purpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) as it is known in the military, is one of the most instantly recognizable military vehicles. They are highly customizable and reliable, able to climb a 60 percent grade and ford 60 inch deep water. Its 6.2 liter V-8 engine is able to easily carry the vehicle’s hefty 5,200 weight with up to 2,500 in additional payload. Its usefulness brings it acclaim from the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force.
Durant is currently held in county jail on a $10,000 bond.
Friday’s ill-conceived jaunt around Alabaster wasn’t Durant’s first run in with authorities. In 2014 Durant was charged with third-degree theft of property as well as public intoxication and trying to escape from custody.
Investigation of the incident continues to be conducted by Birmingham Police.
