Brighton councilman arrested for leaking video in homicide investigation

A Brighton City Council member was arrested Monday and charged with tampering with evidence and obstruction of governmental operations in connection with a double homicide investigation from December 2024.

Jerome Edward McMullin Jr., 54, was booked into the Jefferson County Jail at 10:04 a.m. on June 2 and released approximately an hour and a half later after posting bond. He has served on the Brighton City Council since 2012.

The charges stem from allegations that McMullin recorded video footage of a double homicide from a security camera at the Brighton Community Center and released it to the media while the investigation was still active. Authorities say the video depicted the fatal shooting of two men during a funeral repast at the center on December 13, 2024.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene that afternoon, where two men were pronounced dead. The victims were shot outside the front entrance of the Brighton Community Center. The incident occurred during a gathering following a funeral.

Court documents indicate that McMullin recorded the footage using his personal cellphone while inside a taped-off crime scene and distributed it to media outlets without authorization. Law enforcement officials assert that the release of the video could have interfered with the ongoing investigation.

The case remains under investigation by local authorities.
