BREAKING: Tuberville wins Republican nomination in Alabama Senate contest, handing huge win to President Trump

MONTGOMERY — Former Auburn University head football coach Tommy Tuberville on Tuesday won Alabama’s Republican U.S. Senate primary runoff and will face U.S. Senator Doug Jones (D-AL) in November.

Tuberville defeated former U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions to claim the GOP nomination.

President Donald Trump had backed Tuberville in the race, strongly criticizing Sessions along the way.

Trump’s first attorney general was vying to reclaim the Senate seat he held from 1997 until being confirmed to the president’s cabinet in 2017.

Decision Desk HQ was the first outlet to call the Senate runoff at 7:45 p.m. CT. The Associated Press then called the race at 8:16 p.m. CT.
