Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama touts survey showing Alabamians pay among lowest health insurance premiums in U.S.

According to the federal government’s 2020 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS), Alabamians pay some of the lowest health insurance premiums in the nation.

The study, conducted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), shows that Alabama had the lowest average single premium and the second-lowest family premium among employers nationwide in 2020.

The average total single premium nationwide in 2020 was $7,140, while Alabama’s average sat at $6,393. For average total family premium, the nationwide average was $20,758 while Alabama came in at $17,324.

The 10 lowest states for single premiums are as follows:

  • Alabama – $6,393
  • Arkansas – $6,414
  • Tennessee – $6,485
  • Nevada – $6,493
  • Mississippi – $6,561
  • Utah – $6,593
  • Arizona – $6,612
  • Kansas – $6,675
  • Michigan – $6,683
  • Louisiana – $6,713

The 10 lowest states for family premiums are as follows:

  • Arkansas – $17,093
  • Alabama – $17,324
  • Tennessee – $18,424
  • Louisiana – $18,930
  • Iowa – $18,934
  • New Mexico – $18,949
  • Mississippi – $19,058
  • Montana – $19,401
  • Nevada – $19,524
  • Utah – $19,530

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama CEO Tim Vines in a release touted the survey’s findings and spoke to the insurance provider’s commitment to providing affordable, quality health insurance for its customers.

“Controlling healthcare costs and providing our customers access to the quality healthcare they need remains at the forefront,” advised Vines. “We are consistently focused on putting our customers first. Part of this ongoing effort is offering them healthcare coverage at the most affordable price possible.”
