Byrne, whose Mobile roots go back to the late 1700s, will seek to become the first Baldwin County resident to represent the first congressional district in Congress.
Republican Jo Bonner has held the seat since 2003. He announced a little over a week ago that he will be resigning in August to take the newly-created position of Vice Chancellor of Government Affairs and Economic Development for the University of Alabama System.
The AL-01 seat is a very safe one for the GOP, so a victory in the Republican primary is widely considered tantamount to election.
