The newly restructured seven-member Birmingham Water Works Board made a major change at its June 24 meeting by voting to rename the utility. The board approved an amendment to the utility’s Certificate of Incorporation, officially changing its name to City of Birmingham Regional Water Works, doing business as Central Alabama Water, in a 5-2 vote.

Following the name change, the Central Alabama Water Board took additional action by hiring the law firm Capell & Howard to represent the utility in an ongoing legal dispute. The move comes in response to a lawsuit filed by Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin, who is challenging the legality of a recently enacted state law that reduced the board’s membership from nine to seven members.

Central Alabama Water is the largest water utility in Alabama, serving approximately 770,000 residents across the region.
