Birmingham Veteran’s Day Parade: New route, same sacred tradition

(Alabama Tourism Department)

Details for one of Birmingham’s most celebrated occasions, the Annual National Veterans Day Parade, now in its 76th year, are now available.

The parade route this year will be slightly different than in years past. The new route will similarly begin on 18th Street by the Alabama Power building and end on 19th Street by City Hall. Possibly the most significant difference of the parade route this year is that the parade will go through various historic Downtown Birmingham blocks that it had not reached before.

Mark Ryan, president of the National Veterans Day Parade, spoke about the event.

“This is such a unique event for our city and for honoring the many men and women who have served and currently serve our country,” said Ryan.

“We invite individuals and families to join us downtown to help us celebrate, remember and pay homage to those who have given their all for the U.S. and its people.”

This year’s parade will include a variety of veterans service organizations, members of the U.S. armed forces, Alabama military supporters, local color guards, high school bands, and drill teams.

The parade, the longest-running of its kind in the country, is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. on Veteran’s Day, November 11.

The event will also be broadcast live on nationalveteransday.org starting at 1:30p.m. via nationalveteransday.org for those who cannot physically attend. There will be a 30-minute delay that correlates with the parade reaching the viewing stand at City Hall.
