Justin Smith, a 23-year-old community activist and candidate for the Birmingham City Council District 8 seat, is now addressing legal issues stemming from a 2024 incident in Boston.
While working in the city last year, Smith was charged with felony larceny in connection with alleged thefts from a retail store. He has pleaded not guilty and is currently participating in pretrial proceedings.

According to a Boston Police Department report, Smith allegedly stole almost $50,000 in wallets and handbags from Saks Fifth Avenue. At the time, Smith was working at the establishment.
In a video statement posted to Facebook, Smith addressed the charges directly.
“Over a year ago, as a college student, I was charged in Boston. I pled not guilty and I stand by that because this case is more complicated than a headline or security video,” Smith said. “I came back home to Birmingham. I graduated from college. And I kept building because I believe that my generation and my community deserves leadership that’s honest, that’s been through some things, and that still chooses to serve… I am not stopping. The race continues.”
Smith has built his reputation through youth-led advocacy efforts focused on public safety, gun reform, and community development. He is now campaigning on a platform that includes improving infrastructure, supporting local businesses, and expanding public safety initiatives.
If elected, Smith would become the youngest person to represent District 8. The current council member, Carol E. Clarke, is not seeking re-election.
Smith will face Birmingham Board of Education member Sonja Smith in the August 26 primary.
