The U.S. Department of Transportation announced the award of new grant funding to three Alabama airports. The grants are part of a larger federal funding package that will aid 114 airports spread out over 44 states and three territories.

The airports in Alabama that have received the funding are Huntsville International, H.L. “Sonny” Callahan Airport in Fairhope, and Gulf Shores International. Cumulatively, the three airports were awarded approximately $12 million for terminal and concourse updates with Huntsville receiving $7 million, Callahan receiving $2 million, and Gulf Shores gaining $5 million.

FAA Associate Administrator for Airports, Shannetta R. Griffin, P.E., said the funding will do more than just update airports.

“Today’s funding not only helps modernize airports to meet the needs of travelers today and for years to come but also creates good-paying job opportunities in communities both large and small,” said Griffin.

Congressman Dale Strong, who represents the district that Huntsville International Airport is located in, announced the new funding.

“The Federal Aviation Administration’s continued investment in Huntsville International will greatly improve travelers’ experience as they come and go from North Alabama’s airport,” said Strong. “It is crucial that the airport continue supporting economic development efforts and serve as a reliable transportation hub for those in North Alabama and Southern Tennessee.”

“As your Representative, I am always proud to see our hard-earned tax dollars returned home.”
