As Governor Kay Ivey continues her fight against the United Auto Workers unionization effort at the Mercedes plant, officials across the state are sharing appreciation for her effort to keep the issue in focus.
Mark Mattox, Chairman of the Board for Associated Builders and Contractors of Alabama, was that group.
“Associated Builders and Contractors of Alabama proudly stands with Governor Kay Ivey in her resolve against the United Auto Workers’ attempt to unionize Southern auto plants, recognizing this as a significant threat to Alabama’s economy,” Mattox stated.
“Gov. Ivey’s unwavering commitment to protecting Alabama’s automotive manufacturing sector, often referred to as one of ‘Alabama’s crown jewel industries,’ reflects her dedication to preserving hope, prosperity and career opportunities for the state’s residents.”
Mattox noted that automotive manufacturing is not the only critical state industry that could be affected by the UAW.
“In addition to the automotive sector, commercial construction is another vital component of Alabama’s economy, contributing over $12 billion annually,” Mattox said. “Private, nonunion construction workers represent an overwhelming majority of craft workers in the state—nearly 94%—underscoring the importance of protecting this sector and worker choice.”
According to Mattox, Ivey and the ABC share the same high opinion of Alabama workers. He also said that the Governor has demonstrated strong leadership in the face of the unionization efforts.
“We echo her sentiment that Alabamians work tirelessly and produce some of the world’s best automobiles, and it is crucial not to let external interests undermine this success,” Mattox said. “Gov. Ivey sends a clear message: she is standing up for Alabamians and safeguarding their jobs.”
Associated Builders and Contractors is a national construction industry trade association representing more than 23,000 members. ABC has 68 chapters nationally and its membership represents all specialties within the U.S. construction industry.
