While Hurricane Milton begins to make landfall in Florida, thousands of the state’s residents are fleeing areas projected to be devastated by the storm. Since the beginning of this week, the mass evacuation has caused miles-long traffic congestion slowing the process considerably for many. Further complicating the situation is the lack of lodging that such a situation creates.
On Monday, The Alabama State Parks Division offered a solution to the overcrowding and announced that it has opened all 21 state park campgrounds to displaced Floridians.
“The Alabama State Parks Division is prepared to receive guests impacted by Hurricane Milton. We know that many times on an evacuation route, hotel capacity can fill up quickly – and this is another viable option,” the organization wrote. “Our teams are ready to assist with your stay at all 21 Alabama State Parks. We welcome you to make camping, cabin, or lodge reservations at the park that best fits your needs.
One employee with the division revealed that the communities surrounding the parks have already reached out to offer help to the evacuees.
“I see people in our post and in other posts as they share them saying, ‘Hey, once you get to this park — whatever the park may be — I live a mile down the road and I’m ready to bring a hot cooked meal to somebody,’” Christie Aitken told WBRC 6 News. “So the humanity, the common humanity, is the theme of this – that we’re all in this together.”
Those staying at the parks can choose between tent camping, RV camping, lodges, or cabins.
