On Monday, U.S. Senator Katie Britt signed onto an ultra-timely Keep SNAP Funded Act by Republican U.S. Senate colleague Josh Hawley (R-Missouri).

According to Britt, the legislation is a short, targeted bill that would appropriate money so Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits continue uninterrupted during a federal shutdown, with funding made retroactive to the start of the lapse.

The new push from Republicans in Washington comes as Alabama’s Department of Human Resources says roughly 750,000 Alabamians who rely on SNAP could miss November benefits because USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service has directed states to suspend all November 2025 allotments until federal funding resumes.

Senator Britt said the shutdown and the SNAP disruption is squarely the result of Democratic obstruction in the Senate:

“Democrats could end this shutdown today. Every day this shutdown continues, Chuck Schumer and Senate Democrats continue to prove they couldn’t care less about hardworking Americans. They would rather prevent millions of Americans from putting food on the table than support a spending bill identical to one they supported 13 times during the Biden Administration, all so they can pander to their billionaire donors and increasingly radicalized base. I will continue to put hardworking Americans first and join my Republican colleagues in voting to reopen the government. My team and I will stay in touch with state officials as we work toward solutions that ease the pain countless Alabamians and Americans are feeling due to Democrats’ selfishness.”

Britt also reiterated her support for the Shutdown Fairness Act, sponsored by Republican U.S. Senate colleague Ron Johnson’s (R-Wisconsin), which would pay our troops and excepted federal workers during a shutdown.

Senate Democrats blocked the legislation last week.
